Acceptable Use Policy
Effective Date: 2026-05-29
Purpose
This Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") describes what is allowed and prohibited when using Lantern and the related Products and Services. It is part of our Terms of Service. Violations may result in suspension or termination of your account, and in serious cases referral to law enforcement.
What you can do
- Use Lantern for your child's personal, non-commercial learning
- Add up to four (4) additional adult family members as Permitted Adults
- Customize the experience within the Parent App settings
- Share your experience and feedback with Scout
What you cannot do
Misuse of Lantern
- Attempt to bypass safety guardrails (jailbreaks, prompt injection, etc.)
- Use Lantern in a way that exposes a child to harm
- Use Lantern around children other than your own (the consented Supervised Minor) without obtaining their parent's consent
- Use Lantern for commercial purposes (resale, service-bureau, demo for paying audience without permission)
Illegal or harmful activity
- Use the Products and Services to violate any law or regulation
- Use the Products and Services to harass, abuse, defame, or harm any person
- Upload or transmit content that infringes another person's intellectual property
- Use the Products and Services to send spam or malware
- Use the Products and Services to engage in fraud
Technical abuse
- Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software
- Bypass authentication, authorization, or rate-limiting
- Use automated tools to access the Service without our prior written consent
- Probe, scan, or test vulnerabilities without participating in our responsible disclosure program
- Interfere with the security or integrity of the Service or other users' use
Misrepresentation
- Falsely claim to be the parent of a child
- Provide false information during the consent flow
- Misrepresent your authority to make consent decisions for a child
Reporting violations
If you observe a violation of this AUP — including by Scout itself — please email security@lanternlearning.io or safety@lanternlearning.io.
For COPPA-related concerns: privacy@lanternlearning.io.
Consequences
Violations may result in:
- Warning: for minor or unintentional violations
- Suspension: for significant violations, pending investigation
- Termination: for severe violations or repeated minor violations
- Legal action: where Scout's rights or other users' rights are harmed
- Referral to law enforcement: for criminal conduct
Termination triggers data deletion per our retention schedule, except for records we are required to retain (consent records — 7 years).
Appeals
If you believe enforcement action against your account was incorrect, email legal@lanternlearning.io within thirty (30) days. We will review and respond within ten (10) business days.
Updates
This AUP may be updated as new misuse patterns emerge. Material updates are announced via the Parent App and email.
