Hardware End User License Agreement (EULA)

What this covers
This EULA governs your use of the Software embedded in your Lantern device. Software includes the firmware, operating system, AI models, and any updates Scout provides.
Hardware ownership is separate — you own the Lantern hardware. Software is licensed, not sold.
1. License grant
Subject to your continued compliance with this EULA and the Terms of Service, Scout grants you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable license to:
- Use the Software embedded in the Lantern hardware you purchased
- Receive automatic Software updates
- Use the Software for personal, non-commercial purposes
2. Restrictions
You may not:
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software (except to the extent permitted by law)
- Modify the Software except through Parent App settings we expose
- Remove or alter copyright, trademark, or other notices
- Rent, lease, lend, sell, or sublicense your rights
- Use the Software outside the Lantern hardware
- Use the Software in violation of any law
- Use the Software for commercial purposes
3. Automatic updates
Scout will automatically update the Software from time to time. Updates:
- Apply automatically when the device is connected to the internet
- May include feature improvements, security patches, AI model updates, and safety guardrail updates
- May change the Software's functionality
- Are part of the licensed Software
If you do not wish to receive updates, the Software may not continue to work as designed. Contact support@lanternlearning.io.
4. Ownership
Scout (or its licensors) owns the Software, including all updates. All rights not expressly granted to you are reserved. The Software is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws.
5. Third-party components
The Software incorporates third-party components, including:
- Open-source software (subject to applicable open-source licenses)
- Licensed AI models from OpenAI (real-time voice), Google (Gemini — text recognition; Gemini Live as standby voice provider), and Anthropic (Claude)
- Licensed speech-to-text from Deepgram

6. Privacy
Your privacy is governed by our Privacy Policy and Direct Notice. The Software processes data per those policies.
7. Warranty
The Lantern hardware carries a one (1) year limited warranty (see Refund Policy). The Software is provided "AS IS" with no warranty beyond the hardware warranty.
To the extent permitted by law, Scout disclaims all warranties on the Software, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for purpose, and non-infringement.
8. Limitation of liability
Scout's total liability for any claim relating to the Software is capped at the price you paid for the Lantern device or $100, whichever is greater. This cap does not apply to matters that cannot be limited by law (gross negligence, willful misconduct, COPPA violations).
9. Termination
This EULA terminates when:
- You cease to use the Software (delete Parent App, factory-reset the device)
- Scout terminates the license (for violation of this EULA or the Terms of Service)
- The hardware reaches end-of-life
On termination, you must stop using the Software. The hardware itself remains yours but may not function without the Software.
10. Export controls
You agree not to export the Software in violation of US export control laws.
11. Governing law and dispute resolution
Governed by the laws of the United States and the applicable state set out in the Terms of Service. Disputes are resolved per the Terms of Service.
12. Changes
Scout may modify this EULA by providing notice. Continued use of the Software after the effective date of changes constitutes acceptance.
13. Government end users
If you are a US Government end user, the Software is "Commercial Computer Software" per FAR 12.212 and DFARS 227.7202.
14. Severability
If any provision of this EULA is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
